Synopsis

Following hot on the heels of our hugely successful DarkFest we are delighted to present DarkFest’s little brother - a mini-DarkFest on Saturday March 24th, where the lovely Linda Hayden will be our guest in the 560-seater Genesis Screen One.

We will be taking over the cosy bar area for the five hour event, starting at 3.30 and encompassing high definition screenings of Hammer’s Taste The Blood of Dracula and Tigon’s Blood on Satan’s Claw, both featuring Linda, who will discuss her career on stage during the intermission.

THE FILMS

Taste the Blood of Dracula (1970)

Christopher Lee’s fourth Hammer Dracula is a cut above average and a fan favourite. Set in Victorian London, the plot has three outwardly respectable but inwardly dissolute Victorian gentlemen (John Carson, Geoffrey Keen, Peter Sallis) meeting up with satanist Ralph Bates in a classy bordello. He persuades them to join him in a black magic ceremony, but when they beat him to death at the end of it they become the targets of the revived Dracula, who uses their children (including sexy young Linda Hayden) to extract a suitably bloody revenge. The script takes some effective potshots at the hypocrisy of Victorian society, and great sets and some perceptive direction by Peter Sasdy help make this into one of Hammer’s best Dracula flicks

Blood On Satan’s Claw (1970)

This excellent British horror movie was made around the same time as Witchfinder General, and is a stylish and highly atmospheric effort that serves up some good scares. The setting is 17th century England, where an evil influence takes over a small rural community. Linda Hayden has one of her best roles as Angel, a seductive young blonde who swans around nude doing the devil’s work. We actually get to see Old Nick at one point, and he (she?) is depicted as a hairy creature with long, sharp claws. Patrick Wymark (who played Cromwell in Witchfinder) turns in a solid performance here in the Cushing role of a judge who tries to put a stop to the evil, and there’s also a nice score by Marc Wilkinson.

A RIPPING GOOD YARN:

As a special bonus we are delighted to present Ripper Tour, appropriately set not far from The Genesis in Whitechapel, former haunting ground of Jack the Ripper. Lynn Lowry plays Jacqueline Butcher an American tourist on holiday who gets embroiled in the legend of jolly Jack. Lynn starred in some of the most iconic horror films of the 70s and 80s including The Crazies and Shivers. Dudley Sutton (Lovejoy) plays Jack The Ripper, and we hope to have both Lynn and Dudley with us on the day, as well as other crew members from the movie.

About Linda Hayden:

Born in Stanmore, Middlesex, Linda Hayden’s first film role was playing, an underage temptress in Alastair Reid’s controversial Baby Love. However, it was starring in British horror movies, that she really made her mark. Taste The Blood of Dracula, Madhouse and Blood On Satan’s Claw, being the most famous examples.

Throughout the 1970’s Linda also had major parts in a variety of other films, such as two of the Confessions series, and the BBFC’s Video Nasty favourite, Expose. This is not to mention the criminally small or cameo parts she had in the likes of The Boys From Brazil, The Bill and Stalker. We are delighted to be able to welcome her to our first ever mini-DarkFest!
