Synopsis

Obscuro Barroco, Greek-born artist and filmmaker Evangelia Kranioti’s second feature film, blends documentary and fiction in a lyrical quest for the self through continuous metamorphoses. The words and body of the late iconic transgender activist Luana Muniz travel through the vibrant streets of a nocturnal Rio de Janeiro, more mysterious and seductive than ever. The carnival, challenge to gender norms and political protest are all means to reach a deeply intimate, and at the same time collective, transformation.

The elegiac and hypnotic atmospheres of Obscuro Barroco won the film the Teddy Award at the Berlinale earlier this year and position it among the most original pieces of queer filmmaking of this season.

This screening of Obscuro Barroco is co-curated by Fringe! Queer Film & Arts Fest and the National Film & Television School film student programme The Pursuit of Wholeness, exploring the influences of Ancient Greek mythology and archetypes on cinematic quests for sexual and gender identity.
