The Parkinsons Project follows climber and teacher, Chris Hamper, as he navigates his diagnosis of Parkinson's disease.
His Parkinson's diagnosis has forced him to redefine his passion for climbing. His tremor makes tying knots and clipping gear difficult; his lack of dopamine reduces the reward and motivation process, forcing Chris to find new ways to stay inspired. And yet, once he is on the rock, climbing appears to be one of the very few activities that minimise his symptoms.
Now, eight years after his diagnosis, Chris is potentially coming to the end of the “honeymoon” period of his Parkinson’s. This means he could start to see the effects of the disease more acutely, including the impact it may have on his ability to continue climbing. Knowing this, Chris has taken early retirement from teaching to climb as much as possible around his home in Norway and with friends in Sheffield.

An exploration of the multifaceted and unified nature of British identity. Using camcorders, letters, and analogue memories, these films compose fractions of stories set in rural geographies and trace immigration heritage. From folkloric rumours of gigantic cats, whimsical Elvis impersonation and digital re-examinations of systemic segregation, these films speak from the heart of British identity - collecting stories from all over the nation to paint a cross-cultural, contemporary portrait.
We’ve combined odes to eccentric British humour such as Piece of Cake, and My Dad and the Volcano, traverse the day-to-day of immigrant heritage in Journey Mercies and Dear F... discovering intimate, nostalgic records of regional history. Above all, this programme seeks to celebrate British cultural self-consciousness through the medium of filmmaking.

Two films for the price of one ticket!
ROBOT MONSTER 3D (1953): The monstrous Ro-Man attempts to annihilate the last family alive on Earth, but finds himself falling for their beautiful daughter.
THE INVISIBLE MAN (1933): A scientist finds a way of turning invisible, but in doing so, becomes murderously insane.
Cult film night BAR TRASH continues with CELLULOID JAM, an unofficial celebration of 50 years of THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (1975).
ROCKY HORROR’s lusciously lip-synched opening number — ‘Science Fiction / Double Feature’, sung by Richard O’Brien and mouthed by Patricia Quinn — conjures the lost charms of extended film programming, where you could lose yourself in a double bill for the price of a single ticket.
Our BAR TRASH ‘science fiction double feature’ starts with ROBOT MONSTER 3D (1953), winner of “The Most Ridiculous Monster In Screen History” category in The Golden Turkey Awards by Harry & Michael Medved. Showing in gloriously retro 3D, Phil Tucker’s film (if you can call it that…) is a savagely strange post-apocalyptic hellscape where the last vestige of humanity goes into battle against occupying alien forces, played by ‘gorilla-suit man’ George Barrows wearing his signature ape suit and a diving helmet. Free red/cyan 3D viewers provided.
After an intermission, we present one of James Whale’s incredible run of early 1930s movie masterpieces for Universal. In the words of Richard O’Brien’s song, “Claude Rains is THE INVISIBLE MAN” (1933), giving a brilliantly maniacal performance as a scientist driven to psychotic megalomania by his experiments. Made before Hollywood started censoring itself, this pre-Code gem retains plenty of power to shock, manifesting its titular transformations through wondrous practical and optical movie magic.
“THE INVISIBLE MAN is a perfectly judged marriage of menace and comedy, anchored by superlative special effects and a bravura performance from Rains.” (James Marriott, The Definitive Guide to Horror Movies)
Polite notice: We are showing ROBOT MONSTER in anaglyph red/cyan 3D without subtitles (free retro 3D viewers provided). THE INVISIBLE MAN will screen flat with subtitles. Both features are presented from the best available digital source with one intermission between the two films.
// Part of BAR TRASH: Season 9 — CELLULOID JAM, an unofficial celebration of 50 years of THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (1975).

“FROM THE DARK SWIRLING REACHES OF OUTER SPACE COME THE XENOMORPHS!”
A spaceship from another world crashes in the Arizona desert. Only an amateur stargazer and a schoolteacher suspect alien influence when the local townsfolk begin to act strangely.
Cult film night BAR TRASH continues with CELLULOID JAM!, an unofficial celebration of 50 years of THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (1975).
Referenced in ROCKY HORROR’s lusciously lip-synched opening number — ‘Science Fiction/Double Feature’ — IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE (1953) is based on a story by science fiction legend Ray Bradbury and directed by Jack Arnold (CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON) from a screenplay by Harry Essex (OCTAMAN). It almost featured work by BAR TRASH favourite ‘The Lady From The Black Lagoon’ aka Milicent Patrick, but her alien designs were held over for THIS ISLAND EARTH (1955) which was released after she’d been fired by the studio.
The first 3D film from Universal International, IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE is a much-loved classic that was nominated to join the American Film Institute’s ‘Top Ten Science Fiction Films’ of all time in 2008 (but didn’t quite make the cut…). One of a rush of mind-warping alien invasion films from this era (others include INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS and INVADERS FROM MARS), the film is anchored by two strong performances by Richard Carlson (CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON) and Barbara Rush (WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE) who won a Golden Globe in 1954 as ‘most promising female newcomer’ for her role.
“IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE remains the granddaddy of the ’50s atomic-scare pictures.” (Ed Gonzalez, Slant Magazine)
Polite notice: We are still trying to find a decent anaglyph 3D source for IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE. If we are unsuccessful, we will show Universal’s recent digital restoration in 2D with subtitles. Stay tuned!

A moving, meditative exploration of the migrant experience.
Celebrated for his striking photography, as well as films that span a variety of genres but all drawing on the refugee experience, Al-Janabi’s latest feature is a fascinating slice of magical realism. A wooden figure is the central character in this dark mystery, which was shot in Hungary. An arresting and mysterious cinematic experience it is also an allegory about the universal experience of otherness and the fearful plight displaced peoples so frequently experience.
