On the first Thursday of the month, every month, the Genesis Poetry Slam is an electric night of spoken word performances. There will be laughter, there might be tears, there will definitely be rhymes and rhythms.

Whether you’re here to perform or simply to listen, you’ll be part of one of the friendliest, most supportive slam communities around. We don’t have that reputation for nothing.

The Genesis Poetry Slam has been running for over 15 years, and is London’s only three-round poetry slam. Up to 12 poets compete in a night of competitive poetry, to see who makes it to the final round and can claim the title of slam champion for the month.

The history of film exhibition is a loud one, and the notion of the ‘silent film’ something of a misnomer. For this never-to-be-repeated silent horror double feature, cabaret artist and trained knife thrower Maxim Melton returns to BAR TRASH to provide an improvised live score for THE CABINET OF DR CALIGARI (1920). Then, esteemed stage and screen foley artist Ruth Sullivan will create live sound effects for the Buster Keaton short, THE HAUNTED HOUSE (1921) — all for £5 a ticket!

In China’s Xinjiang region, a Kazakh boy’s magical friendship with a local Han girl blooms amid a world where plants and imagination intertwine.

An Indian dark comedy following Nigerian MBA student Michael Okeke as he navigates the chaotic ups and downs of living in the capital city of Delhi. From battling everyday colourism and drug-dealer stereotypes to being involved with an enigmatic “godwoman”, the film explores the complicated social dynamics of brown-on-black racism with tongue-in-cheek humour.

The screening is curated by culture journalist Shaurya Thapa and his new film screening collective Bhindi-Wire.

The film will include pre-recorded intros and Q&As with director-writer Dibakar Das Roy and lead actor Samuel Robinson.

A full-day cinematic event celebrating the legacy of Bruce Lee.
The programme opens with the documentary LONGSTREET - A PHILOSOPHY IN MOTION, exploring Bruce Lee's involvement in the landmark series, followed by a screening of the original episode "THE WAY OF THE INTERCEPTING FIST."
This is followed by the premiere screening of the feature documentary BRUCE LEE: THE MAKING OF THE BIG BOSS.
The event concludes with a special presentation of THE BIG BOSS, screened from a DCP (Digital Cinema Package) of the original Mandarin version.
All screenings take place on a giant cinema screen for the ultimate big-screen experience, in a retro cinema setting inspired by the classic movie-going experience of the 1970s.

Hosted by the Bloody Mary Film Club, this screening opens with an intro from Genesis’s resident Final Girl, writer, artist and academic Mary Morgan @msmarymorgan. Her PhD, titled “I Want Revenge,” explores violent women on screen and fantasies of vengeance.

Featuring commentary from surviving participants, as well as other filmmakers and critics, this documentary chronicles the career of director John Boorman and the tumultuous production of his film Exorcist II: The Heretic, exploring its critical and commercial failure, how it changed the industry, and the importance of risk-taking in art.

A tender story of first love, belonging and growing up, Beautiful Thing follows neighbours Jamie and Ste as their friendship deepens into romance over the course of one long, hot summer. Alongside them are Jamie's mum Sandra and friend Leah, two women with humour, struggles and stories of their own.

Directed by Hettie Macdonald and adapted for the screen by Jonathan Harvey from his acclaimed play, Beautiful Thing transforms the familiar landscape of a council housing estate into a world alive with warmth, wit and bold primary colours, casting everyday life in a new light.

Thirty years on, it's a joy to discover, or rediscover, this much-loved but underseen film, with the music of Mama Cass beating at its heart.

This screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Hettie Macdonald, moderated by Reclaiam The Frame's Melanie Iredale.
