Token Homo spent his childhood obsessing about John Wyndham’s very British horror stories (The Kraken Wakes, The Chrysalids, and The Midwich Cuckoos), so this “blunderingly effective” (Halliwell's Film Guide) adaptation of THE DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS feels kinda personal. American movie star Howard Keel (CALAMITY JANE) appears as a merchant seaman, waking up in a world turned blind by a shower of meteorites, where killer plants have the power of locomotion (just not in a Kylie way ;). The film’s vicious vegetation and bleak outlook remain shocking, even if the ending rather waters down Wyndham’s unforgiving vision.

Since its screening at Cannes in 2024, Paulo Corneiro's docufiction Savanna and the Mountain (2024) has been touring film festivals around the world. A docufiction about a people protecting their lands, this premier screening in London is supported by Films of Resistance – a decentralised screening collective in support of the Palestinian struggle – to bridge the international resistance to capitalist destruction of ecologies and peoples all around the world.

The film will be followed by a panel discussion with speakers from the local association defending the mountain as well as international resistances against the extractivist and colonial myths of green capitalism. All proceeds go to the local resistance struggle.

A BODY TO LIVE IN is a feature film that traces the life and work of legendary photographer, performer, and "Gender Flex" cultural icon, Fakir Musafar (1930-2018). Through investigating the body modification movement and the trajectory of Fakir’s art career and philosophy, A BODY TO LIVE IN uncovers a riveting facet of queer history. Using Fakir’s early experiments in body play and his photographic works from the 1940s and 50s as a springboard, the film traces the body modification movement as it emerged in LGBT subculture in the early 1970s. The film introduces us to early collaborative experimentation at gay underground BDSM parties, leading to the first piercing shop, moving through the radical faerie movement and the role of body modification during the AIDS epidemic, the emergence of body-based performance art, and the rise of an entire subculture. Insights from key figures including Annie Sprinkle, Ron Athey, Idexa Stern, Cléo Dubois, Jim Ward, Midori, and others provoke deeper reflections about art making, surviving AIDS, and the controversial collaging of various spiritual and cultural practices to build a philosophy. If you haven’t seen horror legend Christopher Lee sing heavy metal, then you can’t really call yourself a fan. In THE RETURN OF CAPTAIN INVINCIBLE (1982), the iconic actor lends his unmistakable basso profundo voice to a song composed by ROCKY HORROR co-creators Richard O’Brien and Richard Hartley for his super villain, Mr. Midnight.

From a time when Nazis were *always* the bad guys, the NY Times called THE RETURN OF CAPTAIN INVINCIBLE “One of the best superhero movies ever made (really)”. A box office flop on its original release, affection has grown for this “rambunctiously entertaining” (The Guardian) tale of a washed-up, alcoholic superhero, played brilliantly by Oscar-winner Alan Arkin (LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE) alongside Kate Fitzpatrick (THE REMOVALISTS) as Patty Patria, an Australian police officer who helps Invincible get back to his former glory.

'We’ll Go Down in History' tells the story of TRUK United, a grassroots, proudly trans football club. Filmed over two years, this short documentary captures the team’s highs and lows on and off the pitch as they create a safe haven for their community in the face of rising transphobia.

After years of estrangement, a woman returns home to help care for her dying mother in this intimate US drama, which explores trans experience, sex work and familial relationships in a subtle but arresting way.

Celebrating the works of Gene Hackman at Genesis Cinema This gritty, fast-paced, and innovative police drama earned five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay (written by Ernest Tidyman), and Best Actor (Gene Hackman). Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle (Hackman) and his partner, Buddy Russo (Roy Scheider), are New York City police detectives on narcotics detail, trying to track down the source of heroin from Europe into the United States. Suave Alain Charnier (Fernando Rey) is the French drug kingpin who provides a large percentage of New York City's dope, and Pierre Nicoli (Marcel Bozzuffi) is a hired killer and Charnier's right-hand man. Acting on a hunch, Popeye and Buddy start tailing Sal Boca (Tony Lo Bianco) and his wife, Angie (Arlene Faber), who live pretty high for a couple whose corner store brings in about 7,000 dollars a year. It turns out Popeye's suspicions are right -- Sal and Angie are the New York agents for Charnier, who will be smuggling 32 million dollars' worth of heroin into the city in a car shipped over from France. The French Connection broke plenty of new ground for screen thrillers; Popeye Doyle was a highly unusual "hero," an often violent, racist, and mean-spirited cop whose dedication to his job fell just short of dangerous obsession. The film's high point, a high-speed car chase with Popeye tailing an elevated train, was one of the most viscerally exciting screen moments of its day and set the stage for dozens of action sequences to follow. And the film's grimy realism (and downbeat ending) was a big change from the buff-and-shine gloss and good-guys-always-win heroics of most police dramas that preceded it. The French Connection was inspired by a true story, and Eddie Egan and Sonny Grosso, Popeye and Buddy's real life counterparts, both have small roles in the film. A sequel followed four years later.

A rundown establishment, a retro diner, lies in the middle of nowhere on the MOTORWAY. It’s our hero’s, Jimmy, only legacy and connection to his deceased parents. It’s where he lived his whole life. Even when the new MOTORWAY blocked access to the diner, Jimmy preferred to stay, holding on to the memories of his family and providing a job to three incompetent but deep-down good-hearted employees. Mara, the rebellious till girl; Nicko, the grumpy handyman who struggles to complete his pension plan; and Abi, a Nigerian immigrant who works there as the cook.

Jimmy’s biggest fear becomes a reality: the bank forecloses his beloved diner. As the night progresses, distrust and greed rear their heads, relationships are shaken, characters are tested and deep buried secrets are revealed. Jimmy and all three employees, alongside their internal rivalry, will encounter the local police, surreal travelers, and drug barons.

The Opening Night party is a chance for everyone to meet, talk about film, and celebrate independent cinema. It’s open to all, whether you work in film or not, or have a film in the festival, it’s an opportunity to have a drink and celebrate and support indie film. Struck dumb by a dangerous cycle of depression and grief, Anne (Sarah-Jane Potts) attempts to shift her life by taking herself on a cheap holiday, she hopes to find peace, beauty and perspective, but on arrival she’s met with noise, squalor and danger. Threats to her safety force Anne to sleep rough in a unknown place, a chance encounter with another solo traveller, Bill (David Ganly) offers her an unexpected solution and a chain of surprising and often hilarious events unfold between these two strangers. Genesis Cinema is the exclusive venue for the interactive film 'Hello Stranger', as an official side event of London Games Festival 2025. The UK premiere screening will be at 7pm on Thursday 10th April with some cast members attending.

This screening will also launch the Interactive Film Club at Genesis Cinema

This innovation in the cinema experience has thrilled audiences at film festivals in France and the UK. It showcases the convergence of film and video games with the audience participating in how the story unfolds.

Synopsis: Cam conducts his entire life from his electronically automated smart-home. Work, shopping, entertainment and most notably: socialising. Cam interacts with strangers on the platform Hello Stranger: a randomised video chatting application.

Eventually, he encounters a masked stranger with an altered voice. Unnerved, Cam leaves the call only to find the stranger has hacked his smart-home and locked him in. The Stranger tells Cam that he must win three rounds of games or it is ‘game over’. Viewers must make decisions and play the 3 games for Cam to survive but one wrong choice could lead to a grisly end.

Celebrate international ABBA day with a special screening of 'Mamma Mia'! Donna (Meryl Streep), an independent hotelier in the Greek islands, is preparing for her daughter's wedding with the help of two old friends. Meanwhile Sophie, the spirited bride, has a plan. She secretly invites three men from her mother's past in hope of meeting her real father and having him escort her down the aisle on her big day.

After his mother disappeared when he was a child, Daruosh, has always struggled to find his place in the world. The Closing Night party and awards ceremony will be another chance to mingle and celebrate indie film. The event is open to all, whether you work in film or not, or have a film in the festival. I will announce the awards as well, and some of the judges will be in attendance too. There is no dress code, but there will be red carpet photos as well as other photos so be aware and let the photographer know if you don’t wish to be photographed. Come and celebrate!

Seasonal Affective Cinema is a quarterly film club screening movies that aesthetically and thematically reflect the changing of the seasons. For spring, we're immersing ourselves in the verdant pastures and delicate birdsong of Jane Campion's period romance, Bright Star.

Bright Star follows the unlikely relationship between the Romantic poet John Keats and his muse Fanny Brawne, chronicling their secret love affair from its blossoming beginnings to its bitter end. Campion frames the story through Fanny's eyes, employing her signature meditative pacing and subtly subversive perspective, whilst her vivid portrayal of 18th century Hampstead brings a sensuous whimsy to the measured screenplay.

Seasonal change moves in tandem with John and Fanny's relationship. Their love grows in the warmth of Spring and Summer, but the colder seasons cast a shadow across their romance. As the blissful scenes set amongst flower-filled meadows and fluttering butterflies draw to a close, we're reminded that Spring's euphoria is only ephemeral. But Bright Star encourages us to savour the joyful haze while we can.
