“FROM THE DARK SWIRLING REACHES OF OUTER SPACE COME THE XENOMORPHS!”
A spaceship from another world crashes in the Arizona desert. Only an amateur stargazer and a schoolteacher suspect alien influence when the local townsfolk begin to act strangely.
Cult film night BAR TRASH continues with CELLULOID JAM!, an unofficial celebration of 50 years of THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (1975).
Referenced in ROCKY HORROR’s lusciously lip-synched opening number — ‘Science Fiction/Double Feature’ — IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE (1953) is based on a story by science fiction legend Ray Bradbury and directed by Jack Arnold (CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON) from a screenplay by Harry Essex (OCTAMAN). It almost featured work by BAR TRASH favourite ‘The Lady From The Black Lagoon’ aka Milicent Patrick, but her alien designs were held over for THIS ISLAND EARTH (1955) which was released after she’d been fired by the studio.
The first 3D film from Universal International, IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE is a much-loved classic that was nominated to join the American Film Institute’s ‘Top Ten Science Fiction Films’ of all time in 2008 (but didn’t quite make the cut…). One of a rush of mind-warping alien invasion films from this era (others include INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS and INVADERS FROM MARS), the film is anchored by two strong performances by Richard Carlson (CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON) and Barbara Rush (WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE) who won a Golden Globe in 1954 as ‘most promising female newcomer’ for her role.
“IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE remains the granddaddy of the ’50s atomic-scare pictures.” (Ed Gonzalez, Slant Magazine)
Polite notice: We are still trying to find a decent anaglyph 3D source for IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE. If we are unsuccessful, we will show Universal’s recent digital restoration in 2D with subtitles. Stay tuned!
// Part of BAR TRASH: Season 9 — CELLULOID JAM, an unofficial celebration of 50 years of THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (1975). Hosted by queer film fanatic Token Homo (creator of BAR TRASH and QUEER HORROR NIGHTS), all films screen with an introduction, intermission, and subtitles/captions (where possible!). Tickets from £3.50. Adults 18+ only. Follow @tokenhomo on Instagram for news and updates. More info at tokenhomo.com //

Cult film night BAR TRASH continues with CELLULOID JAM!, an unofficial celebration of 50 years of THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (1975).
MYSTERY FILMS are very popular at BAR TRASH, where we only reveal the title when we press play! To date, Token Homo has unveiled a long-lost South Korean kaiju film, SPACE MONSTER WANGMAGWI (1967), a killer cat on a cruise ship, UNINVITED (1987), the utterly ludicrous INVASION OF THE BLOOD FARMERS (1967), a zombie apocalypse shot on Super 8, THE DEAD NEXT DOOR (1989), and the meat-munching mayhem of DR. BUTCHER, MD (1980), which we screened with free vomit bags. What celluloid atrocity will we unveil this time…? All we can say is that it will be a horror movie linked to our season theme… but that doesn’t help much, does it?
Polite notice: Our MYSTERY HORROR FILM? screens without subtitles from the best available digital source. We will only reveal the title when we press play. No refunds if you have already seen it or don’t care for it.

GUESS WHO’S BACK! BACK AGAIN! GENESIS SLAM IS BACK – TELL A FRIEND!
Goodness we had such an incredible slam final in December and a break over January but we are BACK and ready to start our new season bringing you incredible poetry once again!
Join us on Thursday 6th of February upstairs at the Genesis Cinema in Stepney Green for your monthly dose of friendly competitive poetry slamming!
Who will be first to join our 2025 grand final? AUDIENCE, YOU DECIDE!
AUDIENCE MEMBERS:
Tickets are £1 each and must be booked in advance. Last slam we were SOLD OUT so grab yours quickly! If you book a ticket but then can't make it, please contact Genesis Cinema to release your ticket.
On the night, just grab a cocktail, a pie and a comfy sofa and watch poets battle it out for a chance to compete in our grand final in December!
POETS:
There are two ways to sign up for a slot:
1) In the PRE SIGN-UP or
2) ON THE NIGHT
We’re always looking for new ways to make our sign-up process fair and accessible for people and at the moment this is the most accessible format we’ve found.
To apply for a PRE SIGN-UP slot, simply comment on our Facebook event page (https://www.facebook.com/events/629070862844955) or email poetry@genesis-cinema.co.uk. We have 4 female, 4 male and 4 non-binary slots available for the PRE SIGN-UP – so please let us know where you fall on the gender spectrum when you sign up. Please note we will not offer you a slot until you provide your gender info, so please include this when you get in touch to avoid disappointment. These spaces fill quickly and are strictly first come first served. Poets with a pre-sign up slot do not need to purchase tickets, your name will be on the door at the box office.
If you don’t get a pre-sign up slot, we will be reserving a couple of additional ON THE NIGHT slots, for those who want to try their luck. Again these ON THE NIGHT slots are strictly first come first served.
We’re a 3 round slam, so please bring 3 poems just in case. Each poem should be 3 minutes or under.
If you’ve scored a PRE SIGN-UP slot please arrive by 7.15pm to keep your slot, or we will allocate it to the next person on the reserve list. To keep things fair for the other slammers, if you haven’t arrived by the time the slam has started and made yourself known to us, you won’t be able to perform!
No props, no costumes (reading your poem from paper or a phone is fine!) and no hate. Other than that the only thing to remember is that the points are not the point....
THE POINT IS THE POETRY!
Whether you come to share your poetry, or just to listen- we really are a very lucky bunch with friendly people and incredible poets!
We don’t have the reputation for being the friendliest slam in town for no reason! We have a great team at Genesis that are so helpful to all our audience and slammers, and we look after each other during the night!
You all make the space we hold as wonderful as it is - we really couldn’t do it without your words and your enthusiasm, which we want to match always! So bring all your good vibes our way and let’s kick off 2025 in style!
Doors at 18:00 for a 19:30 start.

Leaving Baghdad is a road movie that follows Sadik, the personal cameraman to the leader Saddam Hussein, at the end of the nineties. Sadik is trying to escape the grip of the regime, being pursued from country to country, encountering smugglers and crooks on his journey. Sadik suffers from paranoia and constant fear. The Iraqi secret police are after him because he is carrying evidence of the atrocities committed by the regime. Sadik is dreaming to go to London, to join his wife who is, however, unwilling to help. In his despair and loneliness, Sadik writes letters to his son, Semir. These letters turn into a confession and reveal Sadik's past and the real reason for his fleeing , the endless waiting and his paranoia.

“A PRESCRIPTION FOR FRIGHT!”
An eminent scientist aims to solve a recent series of grisly murders by re-creating the crimes in his lab.
Cult film night BAR TRASH continues with CELLULOID JAM!, an unofficial celebration of 50 years of THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (1975).
Referenced in ROCKY HORROR’s lusciously lip-synched opening number — ‘Science Fiction/Double Feature’ (mouthed by Patricia Quinn and sung by Richard O’Brien) — DOCTOR X (1932) is not often screened but pretty much always misunderstood given O’Brien’s mischievous lyric, “Doctor X will build a creature”.
DOCTOR X isn’t a creature feature exactly…, more a murder-mystery about an eminent scientist attempting to solve a recent series of grisly murders by recreating them in his research lab filled with all the dials, gizmos, bubbling beakers, and crackling electrostatic charges essential to the horror genre. A pre-Code classic made before Hollywood started to censor itself, DOCTOR X delights in the devilish details, as the serial killer is revealed to be eating the victims…
DOCTOR X was shot in glorious two-colour Technicolor (restored here, and looking incredible!) and features Lionel Atwill (SON OF FRANKENSTEIN) as Doctor Xavier, the sublime Fay Wray (before she got romanced by a giant ape in KING KONG) as daughter, Joanne, and Lee Tracy (THE BEST MAN) as a wisecracking journalist trying to piece the whole story together. From renowned director Michael Curtiz (CASABLANCA, MILDRED PIERCE), DOCTOR X is a deliriously demented slice of sensationalist cinema.
Polite notice: We are showing DOCTOR X with subtitles from the best available digital source.

“GIANT SPIDER STRIKES! CRAWLING TERROR 100 FEET HIGH!”
A spider escapes from an isolated desert laboratory and grows to tremendous size as it wreaks havoc on the local inhabitants.
Referenced in ROCKY HORROR’s lusciously lip-synched opening number — ‘Science Fiction/Double Feature’ (mouthed by Patricia Quinn and sung by Richard O’Brien) — TARANTULA (1955) is one of the greatest of the 1950s sci-fi atomic horrors, from a recognised master of the form (toxic Jack Arnold also directed CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON and THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN).
Pure pulp cinema, this garish tale of the dangers of atomic experimentation features Leo G. Carroll as an increasingly deformed scientist (the makeup FX are horrifically effective), Clint Eastwood in another early-career bit part (last seen at BAR TRASH in REVENGE OF THE CREATURE), and — arachnophobes beware!!! — the magnificent title beast. TARANTULA also sees fan favourite Mara Corday return to BAR TRASH, having fought off similar beasts in THE GIANT CLAW and THE BLACK SCORPION. Needless to say, this is exactly the sort of film that puts Token Homo in his happy place, and he is stupidly proud to celebrate TARANTULA’s 70th Anniversary with you all.
“A tarantula as big as a barn puts the horror into this well-made program science-fictioner… it is quite credibly staged and played, bringing off the far-fetched premise with a maximum of believability" (Variety, 1955)

"WARNING! 'STRAIT-JACKET' VIVIDLY DEPICTS AX MURDERS!"
After a 20-year asylum stay for a double ax murder, suspicion arises about Lucy Harbin's behaviour. Soon, heads begin to roll again. Is Lucy repeating her past?
Cult film night BAR TRASH continues with CELLULOID JAM!, an unofficial celebration of 50 years of THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (1975).
Having created the ROCKY HORROR role of Dr. Frank N Furter — a scientist! — on stage and screen, Tim Curry was often asked about the inspirations behind his performance:
“When I first did the show, one of the games that the critics played was trying to decide what Frank N Furter was a combination of. The favourite one was Joan Crawford and Vincent Price." Tim Curry
Crawford’s psychotic performance as Lucy Harbin in STRAIT-JACKET (1964) may well have provided one of the specific inspirations for Curry and ROCKY HORROR director Jim Sharman when the crazed scientist dispatches failed experiment Eddie (Meatloaf) with an ice pick.
STRAIT-JACKET brings Crawford back to BAR TRASH after an earlier screening of her missing-link melodrama TROG back in Season 3. Here, she delivers an unhinged caricature of her own well-established big screen persona, ranging from iconic Hollywood glamour to berserk ax-wielding motherly mayhem, making sure “Joan’s fans will not be disappointed” (Time Out).
Token Homo has a tradition of re-creating director/showman William Castle’s promotional gimmicks for our screenings of his films in Bar Paragon. He has previously delivered DIY versions of seat-buzzing system PERCEPTO! for THE TINGLER (1959), and a flying skeleton fourth-dimensional thrill system, EMERGO, for HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL (1959). STRAIT-JACKET comes later in Castle’s career, but you should still expect the unexpected…
Polite notice: A ‘Coward’s Corner’ will be provided for customers unable to endure the final 10 minutes of this feature. We are showing STRAIT-JACKET with subtitles from the best available digital source.

A moving, meditative exploration of the migrant experience.
Celebrated for his striking photography, as well as films that span a variety of genres but all drawing on the refugee experience, Al-Janabi’s latest feature is a fascinating slice of magical realism. A wooden figure is the central character in this dark mystery, which was shot in Hungary. An arresting and mysterious cinematic experience it is also an allegory about the universal experience of otherness and the fearful plight displaced peoples so frequently experience.
About the Festival:
The I’m Migrant Film Festival is a month-long programme of screenings and events bringing together established filmmakers from across the SWANA Region alongside emerging filmmakers from the Arab World and platforming the most promising new talent from young directors.
