The largest anti-war movement since the 1970s unfolds on U.S. college campuses in 2023–24: The Palestine Exception traces a new wave of student activism, as long-silenced taboos on critiquing Israel’s policies – “Palestine exception” – are shattered. The Run is set on a remote running trail in the stunning Lake Garda region of Northern Italy, where a famous fitness influencer’s morning run becomes a race for survival when she is hunted by seemingly motiveless killers. The audience must choose her next move by majority vote using glowsticks. Each decision shaping the story’s outcome in real time.

Despite the challenges of living under military occupation, they set out to build a community from scratch – planting the seeds for what, nearly a decade later, would lead to Palestine’s first Olympic skateboarder.

EXIST follows Palestinian skateboarder, Aram Sabbah, in the weeks leading up to the Olympic qualifiers in Dubai. Leaving his war-torn homeland, Aram isn’t chasing medals, he’s carrying the mantle for Palestine with a drive to send a message – Palestine exists beyond media headlines and nameless statistics. Through skateboarding, Aram defines the forces that seek to silence and erase his people, offering instead resilience and a quiet resistance built on presence, passion and hope.

Cult film night BAR TRASH continues with its 11th sensational season — SYNTHETIC FLESH! — a tribute to more than 100 years of monster makeup FX.

The centre-piece of this season, we celebrate the 100th Anniversary of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1925) with a new live improvised score by queer cabaret performer and promoter, Maxim Melton. Maxim returns to BAR TRASH after blowing us away with their haunting live score for another Lon Chaney masterpiece THE UNKNOWN (1927) on the occasion of our third birthday with Loose Willis.

Lon Chaney (1883-1930) was not just an accomplished vaudeville performer and silent screen actor, he had the ability to totally transform himself through stage makeup and physical distortion, earning him the nickname, ‘The Man of a Thousand Faces’. As Quasimodo, the bell ringer of Notre Dame Cathedral, and Erik, the "phantom" of the Paris Opera House, Lon Chaney created two of the most memorably ‘monstrous’ characters in film history.

Lloyd Kaufman’s THE TOXIC AVENGER (1984) stands with PINK FLAMINGOS and THE EVIL DEAD as one of the most gleefully offensive "midnight movies" of the twentieth century.

The film established Troma Entertainment’s warped modus operandi, but few people in 1984 would have imagined this “silly, sleazy, and graphically violent” (TV Guide) origin story would have launched a global franchise of sequels (3), a TV series (TOXIC CRUSADERS), a computer game (on the NES, Game Boy and Sega Mega Drive), and even a stage musical. Take this opportunity to revisit Lloyd Kaufman’s outrageous original as the splendid 2023 remake mops up at the box office.

Featured special makeup effects artist: Jennifer Aspinall is a two-time Emmy Award winner (for PAM & TOMMY and MADTV) and serial nominee for TV work including SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE and WALK THE PRANK. Her early career in low-budget horror has featured at BAR TRASH before with SPOOKIES (1986) and includes another cult classic with a recent remake, STREET TRASH (1987).

The Run is set on a remote running trail in the stunning Lake Garda region of Northern Italy, where a famous fitness influencer’s morning run becomes a race for survival when she is hunted by seemingly motiveless killers. The audience must choose her next move by majority vote using glowsticks. Each decision shaping the story’s outcome in real time.

The Run is thrilling film festival audiences at Raindance London, Motelx Lisbon, Dinard Brittany and Imagine Amsterdam before taking up residence at the Genesis which is in Jack the Ripper’s backyard of Whitechapel!!

Derek Vineyard is paroled after serving 3 years in prison for killing two African-American men. Through his brother, Danny Vineyard's narration, we learn that before going to prison, Derek was a skinhead and the leader of a violent white supremacist gang that committed acts of racial crime throughout L.A. and his actions greatly influenced Danny. “Fragments of Home” unites two intimate Palestinian films that explore the meaning of home, memory and motherhood amid displacement and conflict. Through the eyes of mothers and children, we see how memory can be both refuge and burden, how the camera becomes a vessel for grief and for hope. These works invite us to reflect on what remains when the walls of home are no longer steady - what fragments of tenderness and resistance we carry with us wherever we go.

While the Israeli army retaliates against the Second Intifada in the West Bank in the early 2000s, a mother films her family's daily life, punctuated by time spent shielding her family from harm in the basement. Now, her son revisits this past, delivering a heart-breaking portrait of the anguish of parents who are forced to choose between their children’s physical safety and the emotional upheaval of leaving home.

The Miracle of Life, Dir: Sabrine Khoury (8 mins, Palestine)

A Palestinian mother-to-be in the Netherlands grapples with emotional and physical challenges during pregnancy. Through personal reflections,she confronts pain, uncertainty, fear of bodily changes, and an identity crisis, all while challenging societal norms around motherhood. Torn between her personal struggles and the devastation in Gaza, she feels guilt and shame, questioning her right to feel pain and wrestling with her privilege while others endure unimaginable suffering.

Followed by a Q&A with director, Victoria Mapplebeck, Sally Kum (Associate Director, Nursing and Health Information, Breast Cancer Now) and Caroline Leek (Director, Fruit Fly Collective) At the age of 38, Victoria Mapplebeck found herself single, pregnant and broke. Unable to combine motherhood with freelance directing, she was forced to abandon her career in TV, instead turning the camera on herself and her son, Jim. Filmed over 20 years, Victoria has recorded hundreds of hours of footage, capturing each twist and turn in Jim’s life, from the thumbs-up he gave her during her first pregnancy scan to his first day at college. MOTHERBOARD is a unique self-portrait charting the real-life comedy and roller coaster of solo parenting. Victoria captures a life where both she and Jim survive her breast cancer diagnosis, two generations of absent fathers and Jim’s rollercoaster teen years with a gallows sense of humour and an irrepressible ability to turn lemons into lemonade. The film navigates the trials and traumas of unromanticized parenting, where chaos rules. We’re privy to the monumental bust ups when tempers fray and doors slam, as well as the pair’s closeness and camaraderie as Jim turns into a fiercely opinionated and funny young adult who suddenly towers over his mum.
