After Life (1998) - BEYOND

What is the one memory you’d hold onto forever? A group of counsellors conduct a series of interviews with the recently deceased, to record their personal details and assist them in choosing a single memory to live in for eternity. Deemed by many as Hirokazu Kore-eda’s masterpiece, After Life is a gentle, sweet and poetic look at both the fleetingness of life and the longevity of memory. Screening as part of BEYOND: A film season exploring how the afterlife is portrayed in cinema. The afterlife is truly unknowable. There’s no one definitive answer to ‘this is what is is’ or ‘this is what is looks like’. BEYOND will examine how filmmakers and art departments go about visualising this unknowable idea, celebrating the creativity and craft required to bring the afterlife to life.
