Fearless is a heartwarming documentary that features six women aged between 78 and 90. As young women they left their homes in the Caribbean, Ireland and South Asia to answer post WWII Britain’s call for workers.

The film uses archive film and photography to interweave pivotal moments in women’s social history with the interviewees’ memories of life in Britain. These are the moments and movements that impacted women then and now. They include the Notting Hill uprising and the fight for racial equality in housing and jobs. Independent Candidate is an observational documentary following Fiona Lali’s and her Revolutionary Communist Party’s (RCP) 2024 parliamentary campaign in Stratford & Bow, East London. The film sets out to capture the everyday reality of grassroots politics and the determined energy of RCP’s activists. They are running to win, but the film’s focus is the campaign more than the result, as Fiona and her comrades organise to bring their vision of radical change directly to the people.

As you might expect, BAR TRASH gets regular requests to screen films from ‘The Pope of Trash’ himself, aka Baltimore legend John Waters. HAIRSPRAY (1988) opened our last season and became our second fastest selling show ever (after ROCKY HORROR!). And so here we go again!

The spectacularly foul-mouthed SERIAL MOM (1994) was an obvious choice to continue our season’s theme of kick-ass women. The indomitable Kathleen Turner stars as a suburban mom on a rampage, murdering anyone who crosses her kids and sparring memorably with Dreamland legend Mink Stole in a series of (shockingly quotable…) prank calls. Much of SERIAL MOM was shot in the suburban communities and downtown Baltimore locations Waters celebrates escaping from, and Turner’s character Beverly Sutphin was modelled on Waters’ very own mom.

“SERIAL MOM is one of Waters’ most personal and autobiographical works. Marianne (Tilda Swinton), a reclusive rock star on vocal rest, and her younger lover Paul (Matthias Schoenaerts) are enjoying a romantic summer together on the Italian island of Pantelleria. Their reverie is discourteously interrupted by the arrival of Marianne’s narcissistic ex-lover Harry (Ralph Fiennes) and his newly discovered daughter Penelope (Dakota Johnson). Harry wastes no time expressing his intention of reuniting with Marianne and tensions begin wildly sparking between the quartet.

The ensuing chaos is a bonfire of the grotesque that provides a biting satire of celebrity and privilege, whilst the languorous narrative style and scintillating sexual undercurrents draw strong influence from 20th century European psychological dramas. A Bigger Splash was released a couple of years before Guadagnino’s mainstream breakthrough with 2017’s Call Me By Your Name, and offers a striking glimpse into the brilliant filmmaking that has come to characterise his later releases; Call Me By Your Name’s dreamy, sun-dappled visuals, the frenetic camera work of Challengers, and the critique of colonialist entitlement that is woven through Queer.

Criminally overlooked and critically undervalued, SPOOKIES is the best 1980s rubber-suited creature feature you’ve (probably) never head of! It’s also insanely weird and is as famous for its expertly rendered creature effects as it is for the production’s bizarre backstory.

Produced by Michael Lee – founder of notorious UK home video distributor VIPCO – SPOOKIES faltered when its original creators Brendan Faulkner and Thomas Doran were fired from the production (originally titled ‘Twisted Souls’). They were replaced by editor Eugenie Joseph who only had half a film to work with and so went on to shoot additional footage to fill in the blanks… The new footage used an entirely different cast and storyline.

Some of SPOOKIES is about a carload of idiots who find themselves seeking shelter in a spooky old mansion where they find an ouija board… The rest of SPOOKIES is (possibly…) about a boy who runs away from home and is attacked by a monstrous werecat (with a hook for a hand!). But don’t worry, the whole is far greater than the sum of these disparate body parts: “There aren't a lot of horror films so daring as to cram as many weird rubber-suited monsters into one movie.” (Meagan Navarro, Bloody Disgusting).

One of the most common audience requests for future seasons of BAR TRASH was ‘more world cinema’. This gave Token Homo a great excuse to explore screen cultures of other nations with an un-proud history of exploitation cinema. Countries we are visiting this season include: Turkey (THE SWORD AND THE CLAW); Italy (DON’T TORTURE A DUCKLING); Japan (LONE WOLF AND CUB); and now India (we’ve already been to Mexico and hope to visit the Philippines soon!).

Ranjit S. Ruprai is creator of cult film night SUPAKINO and co-owner of new boutique blu-ray distributor, The Cloud Door, specialising in South Asian cinema. Token Homo started screening films with Ranjit back in 2019, so who better to introduce our first ever Bollywood title? BAR TRASH celebrates our 3rd year and 10th sensational season with WE ARE TRASH!, a fan-made mixtape of cult and chaotic cinema (May to Aug 2025).

Some films you can’t resist, and Michael Mann’s self-described “Freudian fairytale on the nature of Fascism” has been appearing on our audience suggestion cards since we launched them way back in season 3 (TRASH OR TREASURE?). But don’t let Mann’s reputation as a master make you think we’ve veered to the dark side of ‘quality cinema’. THE KEEP has a production history as troubled as any we’ve ever shown at BAR TRASH!

Set in Romania during World War II, THE KEEP follows a group of Nazi soldiers who unleash a malevolent supernatural force after setting up camp in an ancient stone fortress in the Carpathian Mountains. Adapted from a novel by F. Paul Wilson, THE KEEP features a stunning score by Tangerine Dream, jaw-dropping special effects (completed after the death of supervisor Wally Veevers), and a dreamlike narrative caused, in part, by directorial indecision, extensive re-shoots, and radical re-editing by the studio to reduce the run time… Strap in for a wild ride to the dark side.

Complicit: A Michael Haneke Retrospective at Genesis Cinema George, host of a television show focusing on literature, receives videos shot on the sly that feature his family, along with disturbing drawings that are difficult to interpret. He has no idea who has made and sent him the videos. Progressively, the contents of the videos become more personal, indicating that the sender has known George for a long time.

Armed with deceptively sweet smiles and some golf clubs, they proceed to terrorize and torture the tight-knit clan, giving them until the next day to survive.

Complicit: A Michael Haneke Retrospective at Genesis Cinema An aged tailor recalls his life as the schoolteacher of a small village in Northern Germany that was struck by a series of strange events in the year leading up to WWI.

Classic films back on the big screen in 35mm. Akira Kurosawa's final masterpiece, Ran is a reworking of Shakespeare's King Lear, set in feudal Japan.

Ran tells the story of Hidetora Ichimonji (Tatsya Nakadai – Yojimbo, Kagemusha) an aging warlord who, after spending his life consolidating his empire, decides to abdicate and divide his Kingdom amoungst his three sons Taro (Akira Terao - Letter from the Mountain, Dreams), Jiro (Jinpachi Nezu – The Man in White, Red Shadow: Akakage) and Saburo (Daisuke Ryu - Tono monogatari, Gojo reisenki: Gojoe).

When Saburo voices concerns about the wisdom of his father's plan, claiming that treachery within the family will be inevitable, Hidetora mistakes these comments for a threat and when his servant Tango comes to Saburo's defense, he banishes both of them. This allows Taro and Jiro to take the reigns of power unopposed, leading to a brutal and bloody struggle for the absolute power of the warlord.

Majestic in scope, Ran is a profound examination of the folly of war and the crumbling of one family under the weight of betrayal, greed, and the insatiable thirst for power.

This is a special centenary edition of Sergei Eisenstein’s legendary Battleship Potemkin featuring the celebrated score by Pet Shop Boys. A fixture in the critical canon almost since its premiere, Eisenstein’s film about a 1905 naval mutiny was revolutionary in both form and content. Battleship Potemkin is renowned for its dynamic compositional strength and editing of such frame-perfect precision that it’s hard not to be swept along. First revealed at a special outdoor screening in front of an estimated 25,000 in Trafalgar Square in 2004, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe’s score, performed with the Dresdner Sinfoniker and orchestrated by Torsten Rasch, blends electronic beats with orchestral grandeur to create a contemporary cinematic experience.

Alongside his leading lady Ann Darrow and his first mate Jack Driscoll, they arrive on an island and discover a legendary creature said to be neither beast nor man. Denham captures the monster to be displayed on Broadway as King Kong, the eighth wonder of the world.

As a result, every well-meaning, tyrannical or self-destructive move he makes for the rest of his life appears in some way to be a reaction to that deeply wounding event.

Director Akira Kurosawa's resetting of William Shakespeare's "Macbeth" in feudal Japan is one of his most acclaimed films.

An unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Nosferatu (1922) is the quintessential silent vampire film, crafted by legendary German director F. W. Murnau. Rather than depicting Dracula as a shape-shifting monster or debonair gentleman, Murnau’s Graf Orlok (as portrayed by Max Schreck) is a nightmarish, spidery creature of bulbous head and taloned claws — perhaps the most genuinely disturbing incarnation of vampirism yet envisioned. Don’t miss out on the chance to experience this imaginative new take on an iconic horror classic!

Classic films back on the big screen in 35mm. Truffaut's superb feature debut remains an influential landmark in the history of the cinema. Antoine Doinel (Jean-Pierre Laud), a 13-year-old is constantly in trouble - justifiably or otherwise - with his parents and teachers. Drifting into truancy and petty theft, he soon finds himself at odds with still less sympathetic figures of adult authority. Shot on the streets of Paris, the film exudes an emotional authenticity born of the semi-autobiographical story, and displays real compassion as it charts a seemingly unstoppable progress towards delinquency. Great credit goes to Léaud, whose engaging but entirely uningratiating performance is a miracle of naturalism. Truffaut managed to gather many talents, on both sides of the camera, who would prove crucial to the development of the nouvelle vague. Marvellous stuff.
