She is a dreamer, a fighter - curious and full of mystery. She is full of contradictions. Sometimes vulnerable, often wild and unpredictable. She is a lover, a mother, a teenager, a wife, a daughter, a woman, and this is her story.

…Morvern Callar, Wadjda, Lilya 4-Ever, Juno, Betty Blue, Amelie, Coraline, Kika, Mulan, Frida

We continue our commitment #WomenInFilm2018 with our season “Her Name Is…” which will see us screen films centred on her.

CinemaItaliaUK was created in 2014 by the former Associate Director of the Italian Film Festival UK, Clara Caleo Green, with the aim of giving Italian contemporary films a permanent “home” in the UK. Three years on Genesis hosts monthly CinemaItaliaUK events.

The screening of Malena will be followed by a discussion with filmmaker Luisa Pretolani & Mary Wild.

Mary Wild is the creator of PROJECTIONS - a popular lecture series on psychoanalysis for film interpretation, which began at Freud Museum London in 2012. She teaches film courses at City Lit, The SITE for Contemporary Psychoanalysis and Hackney Picturehouse. Mary's research interests include the horror film genre, science fiction cinema, high-camp melodramas, and ontological thrillers.

In 1941, Renato was 13 years old and although the world was at war, nothing ever happened in this sleepy village in Sicily. Until the day he discovered something that would change his life forever... Malna, the beautiful young war widow who was the obsession of every man and the envy of every woman. Because of her, Renato will come to learn all of life's lessons and find himself in places he never could have imagined.

#WomenInFilm2018 is presented in association with Birds Eye View, Hackney Wicked Women, WFTV, F-Rated, Bechdel Test Fest, Cinesisters, and #genesisters. As part of this year-long season we'll be screening films that have: a female director/co-director, a female writer/co-writer, or a strong/iconic female lead.
