A reclusive man interviews a group of human souls, all competing for the chance to be born. But as the souls become more inquisitive and the process more difficult, his own past starts to catch up with him.
Edson Oda’s debut feature won the Screenwriting prize at Sundance in 2020, before a limited theatrical release due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Drawing inspiration from Hirokazu Kore-eda and Terrence Malick in its exploration of existential themes, “Nine Days invites you to re-consider your entire world view” (Peter Debruge, Variety)
Screening as part of BEYOND: A film season exploring how the afterlife is portrayed in cinema. The afterlife is truly unknowable. There’s no one definitive answer to ‘this is what is is’ or ‘this is what is looks like’. BEYOND will examine how filmmakers and art departments go about visualising this unknowable idea, celebrating the creativity and craft required to bring the afterlife to life.
